/ EVENTS AND HOLIDAYS, WHAT TO DO IN MARTVILI

When: 6th of May and 23rd of November
Alertoba, also known as St. Giorgi’s Day, is celebrated annually in St. Giorgi church of Alerti in Martvili on May 6 and November 23. St. Giorgi of Alerti was considered to be a powerful icon throughout Georgia. People laid the sick in front of the St. Giorgi icon for the purpose of healing, stayed up all night and prayed for the sick. In addition to this celebration there was a market day. People used to bring handmade items, sweets for sale and then also a feast and dances were held there. Now Pilgrims come to celebrate the Alertoba occasion from all parts of Samegrelo. The church is located in Alerti village, 22 km away from the municipal centre.
